The Game Farm - It Really was a Farm! The 2007 Season Starts 14 April 2007 PHEASANTS ARE READY FOR THE HUNT! September 17, 2007 |
|
A very traditional hunt under rough but not tough conditions. This would be what the European traditionalists would call a rough shoot, over fields that were once farm land but have been out of production for 20 or more years. The fields are very open with shrubs and brush growing throughout providing cover for birds the original grouse and the pheasant or chukar from the Game Farm. A close look at the above picture will show a pheasant being shot by the outside gunner while the judge waits for the fall and the handler waiting for a tap on the shoulder to send his dog. What a great picture what a great time, Spaniel field trials in Clayton, next trial fall 2008 watch for dates.

The fields are outlined with hardwoods, both Oak and Maple show where the old stone fences are slipping slowly back into the ground. The fields themselves are mostly grass with clumps of birch poplar and alder wood throughout. There are juniper bushes as well as blackberry, raspberry and thimble berry bushes, all in all challenging for man and dog. If the natural terrain is not enough note the man made obstacles seemingly placed to challange you dog or ours at every turn.

This year we will be offering different areas to hunt with challenges particular to each environment. We have cleared a couple of the older fields to bring them back into production sort of speak. |
